GREYS STRATA QUILTED JACKET

METHODS
To test the insulating properties of the garment, we measured the cooling rate of a bladder of warm water placed in the centre of the jacket. We filled plastic bags with 500 millilitres of water at 50ºC and used aquarium thermometers to take in-situ temperature measurements of the water in 15-minute intervals over a two-hour period. Pack size was measured by putting the jackets in a 20cm-diameter stuff sack and compressed with a 5kg weight. The jacket was then weighed with calibrated scales.

Design Thoughts

The Strata jacket uses Thermatex 500 sheet insulation that is relatively compact and held in place by horizontal baffle stitching. The jacket features a short collar, a Velcro closing over the main zip and two zippered outer pockets. It also has an elongated back to improve coverage when standing. However, the jacket came up a little small for its size (L) so felt a little constricting. It’s well worth trying on first to find the right size.
Test Results

The Greys jacket came in the top three in terms of insulation ability, retaining 57.6 per cent of the heat, which was just slightly below the Fortis jacket. It was also the lightest on test at just less than 700g but pack size was in the mid-range at 7.7 litres.

PROS Lightweight with great insulation properties. CONS Sizes come out a bit small.
