TF GEAR Thermo-tex Endurance Smock

To test the insulating properties of the garment, we measured the cooling rate of a bladder of warm water placed in the centre of the jacket. We filled plastic bags with 500 millilitres of water at 50ºC and used aquarium thermometers to take in-situ temperature measurements of the water in 15-minute intervals over a two-hour period. Pack size was measured by putting the jackets in a 20cm-diameter stuff sack and compressed with a 5kg weight. The jacket was then weighed with calibrated scales.

Design Thoughts

Unlike all the other jackets on test, which have full-length zips, this is a pullover-style smock. It features a cavernous front storage pocket and a kangaroo-style handwarmer pocket. Another interesting feature is the side ventilation zips, meaning you can cool yourself down a little if you get too hot, without taking the entire jacket off. Another unique feature is an adjustable toggle on the collar so that you don’t get any cold air down your neck.
Test Results

The TFG jacket was at the lower end in terms of insulation performance, being very similar to the Buffalo and retaining 55.3 per cent of the heat. The jacket was generally lighter and packed smaller than most at 720g and 7.1 litres.
PROS Comfortable, light and compact.Kangaroo-style handwarmer pocket. Great deal price on the TFG website. CONS Lower level of insulation.
